Introduction
Beriberi is a vitamin B1 deficiency disease. It affects many
parts of our body like muscles, heart and digestive power etc. In those parts
of Southeast Asia where rice is the staple food, people are suffering from it
in large numbers.
If the beriberi is not treated on time, then it can be dangerous
for health. In this case you should include vitamin B1 in your daily food.
Non-vegetarian products, dairy products and cereals are the main sources of
vitamin B1. It protects you from beriberi disease.
There are two types Beriberi disease: Wet Beriberi and Dry
Beriberi. Dry beriberi weakens the nerve, causing loss of muscle power, or
muscles paralyze. Humid or wet beriberi affects the heart.
Causes

dialysis also increases the risk of getting beriberi disease.

Home Remedies for Beriberi
1. Almond
Almonds contain essential thiamine which is very important for
the prevention of beriberi disease. Almond contains all the essential minerals
and vitamins that motivate the body to function smoothly. Soak about 10 to 1
almonds in water every night and peel them before eating in the morning.
2. Sunflower Seed
Sunflower seeds contain compounds such as selenium, omega 3
fatty acids, due to which they are also rich in antioxidant properties.
Vitamins B1, B5 and B6 are also present in these sunflower seeds. Sunflower
seeds taste like walnuts, so it can be chewed like this. One tablespoon of
sunflower seeds should be chewed daily.
3. Pods or Beans
Beans are extremely nutritious. Beans also contain protein,
calcium, minerals and thiamine which are very important for better health of
bones and muscles. Be sure to eat a vegetable of beans twice a day.
4. Potato
Potatoes are also nutritious foods. It contains high amounts of
phytochemicals, iron, potassium, copper, vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B6.
Potatoes should be boiled before eat.
5. Brown Rice
Brown rice has far more nutrients than white rice, which are
beneficial for the body. Thiamine is also high in brown rice. Daily brown rice
in take also helpful in recover beriberi disease.
Precaution
Beriberi is treated with thiamine supplementation. In which the
doctor undergoes a blood test which shows how well the body is absorbing the
vitamins. The doctor will also give you directions on consuming certain types
of food based on thiamine, in which you will be advised to take cereals,
poultry, meat, beets, dry fruits, tomatoes and orange juice etc.
Rice, undercooked and raw meats etc. can become a problem for
not absorbing vitamin B1 in your body. To avoid beriberi disease, nutritious
and balance diet should be taken which has proper amount of thiamine.
Pregnant and lactating mothers should also be periodically
checked for vitamins in the body. Also, such individuals who consume more
alcohol should also get vitamin deficiency checked periodically.
